Points Match 7 Burwell Lode Upware 12th September 2021

Another pleasant day, almost perfect apart from too much weed and not enough colour in the water but obviously plenty of fish present.  The boaters also thought it was a good day for a cruise but for a change they actually improved the fishing by introducing some colour, most of us found we caught for 10 – 15 mins after each boat went past and before the silt settled again! For those drawn nearer the lock sport was slow, why more fish were willing to feed further up towards Wicken Lode is a mystery.  Russ Smith and Paul Sumption made the most of this and from the last two swims, took 1st and 2nd places with good weights of just over 10 lb and 9½ lb respectively.  This was only the 6th match Russ has fished and he was particularly pleased to win using rather unconventional waggler tactics, a 1973 fixed spool, a 1950s centrepin and sweetcorn, not the most noted bait for The Lode.  Following last seasons specimen 4 lb+ eel, a very near miss win at Mepal a few weeks ago and now this 1st place, Russ is the one to watch!  I forgot to mention in the Mepal report that Russ would have had a better weight for at least 2nd place had he not had to return home for his keepnet, a ½ hours fishing that probably cost him a couple of lb. Trevor and Ken also had respectable weights but catches then gradually fell to only just over 2 lb, the fish just weren’t feeding nearer the lock. Once again it was nice to see a few grass snakes swimming past, some compensation for the lack of fish! Ian Claydon
