Fished on Burwell Lode, 24 June 2012

I don’t think I have ever fished in such torrential rain! A 4:30am start didn’t deter Trev Sturge, Ian Darler, John Pope or me, but who could blame those who woke up, looked out at the weather, and put the bed covers over their heads! The sensible anglers, Mick Curtis and Jay Johnson, turned up a bit later on, but all of a sudden the sky got grey again and back came the rain. Job done, though we did get some good bream and tench, with worm bring the best bait. Unfortunately, two of us lost carp. I am not certain who were the most surprised, the anglers or the fish!
A true dawn raid, except I just don’t think Percy would have got out of the van, and we would have spent all morning travelling to different venues. Ok for him because he could fish in the week, but it did get my goat a bit when we went on our adventures without fishing. Ian had the best catch of tench and bream with an estimated total of 35lbs. Not bad for a very cold wet morning. Trevor also had four bream and a couple of tench, and I had silver bream and rudd. Yes I decided to give the big fish a miss as I had a fantastic evening catch of rudd, dace, bleak, perch, hybrids and lovely true silver bream in the week. These are fish of my childhood; we used to catch them regularly on the Cam. I did get cold even in my full winter gear....oh please can we have some better weather! The wild life had hunkered down, so apart from a couple of swans and their young there’s not much to report. I did have a lovely conversation with a lady who farms the area. I am not convinced with all that is going on in the reserve and she told me some stories. I might have a rant in the coming weeks. One thing is certain I shall be back on the Lode after a few personal bests.
