2016 Championship: Round 4

It’s not unusual to report incidents about raking your swim and after this match there is clearly still much to be learned.  Hearing of others loosing rakes because they had forgotten to hold on to the rope when ‘casting’, poor John Reed tied his around his ankle just to be sure.  Unfortunately he tied it a bit short and upon hurling the weighty rake towards the far bank he found himself waist deep in the water! Next swim down was Jody Rose, after he’d stopped laughing and managing to ask if John was OK, he too nearly fell in when the curtains in the boat opposite suddenly opened to reveal a lady wearing very nice lacey underwear.  She was pressed against the glass trying to see what all the splashing was about.  Not knowing where else to look he turned a bright red colour which he later attributed to forgetting his sun cream!  The shock certainly put him off the fishing, next time Jody watch the float not the boat! Also before the whistle, Kevin and Trevor had a friendly debate about hemp, Kevin thinking it was still a month too early to be effective.  Well, with over 7 lb for first place Trevor was proved right but perhaps Kevin also because despite best efforts hemp didn’t work in his swim, he managed only 2 lb+.  Trevor kindly offered Kevin a lesson in hemp fishing, guess the reply! Mark Freeman worked hard for his 6 lb 9 ozs, narrowly beating Rob Turner into third with 6 lb 8 ozs.  The earlier pegs suffered from the usual pike activity which was responsible for the loss of some half decent skimmers of up to 1½ lb.  Apart from these lost fish no one had much to remember, with all having to settle for nets of silvers between 5 lb and a few ozs.  Mike Lynch however was left dreaming, he watched a 3 lb perch sun bathing in his swim while he was tackling up, preparing a special rig just for it, but then as Trev blew his new whistle it swam off to a safe area not to be seen again. Apologies for the few errors I made in the Leader Table, these should now have been corrected but if you do spot anything odd let me know.  Please note that I have now spelt Ashly correctly; it was originally Ashley when his Mum thought he was a girl but she then changed it to avoid confusion! The next match is on The Cam again, downstream from the railway bridge at Chesterton.  The draw will be on the bank near to the small cut through from the road to just above the railway bridge.  This is a noted bream and tench stretch so remember to tie those knots properly!  Book on with Trevor if you haven't already.
