2016 Championship: Round 1

There was some nervousness during the pre match chatter, not because it was our first get together for some months but because there was a new lady among us! Ladies are of course always welcome but Tarnya seemed quite a threat, rumour had it that she regularly fished Mepal, had caught most of the resident carp more than once and had been practicing for this match all week. With several spare keep nets in her bag it’s not surprising that some were a little shaky. None of us however had bargained for the colder than average water, a result of the poor summer so far and especially cool preceding week. This definitely had a detrimental effect in the deeper water swims, with those drawn at the far end of the pit, including Tarnya, struggling all day for just a few ozs. Rob Turner was the exception, he made some good casts to shallow warmer water next to the reeds and tempted two carp and two good bream for just over 26 lb and 1st place. Mike Lynch too fished shallow water next to reeds and tempted over 10 lb of rudd and roach to his net for 2nd place. Someone along the deep water end was trying for a bigger fish but was rather hopeless with a catapult, sweet corn kept raining down on poor Kevin as it was blown downwind of the intended target. Good job they weren’t using choppy!
