Mervyn Linford sent us this catch report:
Hi Graham, I tried the 100ft at Mepal. Unfortunately it was 'gin clear' - very unusual according to the locals I was speaking to. I had a few small perch and roach and a couple of really nice dace. I was told that a fortnight ago you could walk across the backs of the fish in the river! Isn't that always the way. The next day I took your advice and went to Baits Bite lock. I fished very close to the car park and although the weed was a bit of a problem I fished shallow with hemp, tares, worms, maggots and casters and had a net full of fish. Mostly small but with some perch up to 1lb, some beautiful dace and chublets, two rudd of half a pound or more and some goer roach. I've never caught a roach on elderberry in spite of all the Mr Crabtree talk but I picked some from the hedge and caught two; one of them the biggest roach of the day. A man further up river was free lining bread and had an enormous chub. Thanks for the advice I shall be back! Mervyn Linford
